The clay ran in a seam, full of rocks, roots, and other contaminents. Ofelia uses an old axe to dig it out. This is a "micaceous" clay, full of small 1-2mm flecks of mica which in a fired pot distributed the heat so the pot would not break even over the direct flame of a gas stove. I was also plastic enough to work well, but not so plastic as to make it shrink excessively when drying.
